173 – Contributory Parent visa (Temporary)

The Contributory Parent visa (subclass 173) is a visa category that allows parents of children who are permanent residents in Australia to sponsor their parents to live in the country for a period of up to two years. This visa category is the first stage of a two-stage process, and it requires significant costs to be paid by the applicant. However, the processing time for this visa is significantly shorter than that of the Parent visa (subclass 103).

Introduction

  • Holders of a Contributory Parent visa (subclass 173) are permitted to reside in Australia for up to two years.
  • They are eligible to apply for Medicare, which provides access to Australia's public healthcare system.
  • They are allowed to work or study in Australia during their stay. However, if they wish to work, they will need to apply for a separate work visa or get an exemption from the Department of Home Affairs.

The applicant

  • the applicant must have a child who is an Australian citizen, or
  • a permanent Australian resident, or
  • an eligible New Zealand citizen

The sponsor

If your child is not an eligible sponsor, you may be sponsored by the following persons:

  • your child’s partner
  • guardian or family member of your child
  • guardian or family member of your child’s partner
  • a community organisation

VISA HOLDERS

  • The sponsor of a Contributory Parent visa (subclass 173) is required to provide moral support to their family members during their stay in Australia.
  • They must also provide adequate accommodation for their family members to live in during their stay.
  • In addition, the sponsor is required to provide financial support to their family members to cover their living expenses while they are in Australia. This includes expenses such as food, clothing, and transportation.
