The Subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa is designed to allow employers who are experiencing shortages of skilled workers to fill the gaps by recruiting from overseas. The visa is divided into four streams, each with its unique criteria that must be met by applicants.

In situations where there is a shortage of skilled workers, organizations can sponsor suitably qualified and experienced foreign workers to fill nominated positions. The nominated position must be listed on the Strategic Short-term Skilled Occupations List (STSOL).
To be able to sponsor a skilled worker, the organization must first become a Standard Business Sponsor, which is valid for a period of 5 years if approved.
Nomination process: Before submitting the application, the applicant must be nominated by an approved sponsor. Nominations are valid for 12 months from the approval date or until one of the following events:

Employers who are unable to find a suitable Australian worker with the required skills and experience may nominate and sponsor a skilled foreign worker under the Medium-term stream if the occupation is listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
The nomination process involves the applicant being nominated by an approved sponsor before submitting their application. The nomination remains valid for 12 months from the date of approval, or until the TSS visa application is approved, the nomination application is withdrawn, or the sponsorship approval is cancelled.
The nominating employer has certain obligations, which include ensuring that the nominee only works in the nominated occupation, maintaining appropriate records, providing equivalent terms and conditions of employment to the visa holder, providing records or information when requested, paying for all travel costs, providing training to Australians and permanent residents, engaging in non-discriminatory recruitment practices, paying for the removal of unlawful non-citizens, and cooperating with inspectors.
