The subclass 500 Australian Student visa provides international students with the chance to study in Australia’s highly regarded education system.

To be eligible for this visa, students must first secure admission to a full-time course at an accredited Australian educational institution.

If approved, the student will be permitted to enter Australia for the duration of the course, as determined by the institution’s program.

Introduction

If you meet the visa eligibility requirements and wish to study full-time in Australia, you may be eligible for the Student (subclass 500) visa.

Before applying, you must ensure that you:

  • Have been accepted to study a full-time course that is registered under the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) by an Australian educational institution
  • If you are under 18 years of age, have appropriate welfare arrangements in place for the duration of your stay in Australia.

The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement is in place to ensure that the applicants who are granted a student visa genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily to complete their course of study. The purpose of the GTE requirement is to make sure that the visa is being used for its intended purpose and not as a means to gain ongoing residency in Australia.

Conditions

The visa is usually given for a period of up to 5 years.
