The subclass 500 Australian Student visa provides international students with the chance to study in Australia’s highly regarded education system.
To be eligible for this visa, students must first secure admission to a full-time course at an accredited Australian educational institution.
If approved, the student will be permitted to enter Australia for the duration of the course, as determined by the institution’s program.
If you meet the visa eligibility requirements and wish to study full-time in Australia, you may be eligible for the Student (subclass 500) visa.
Before applying, you must ensure that you:
The requirements for this visa are:
The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement is in place to ensure that the applicants who are granted a student visa genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily to complete their course of study. The purpose of the GTE requirement is to make sure that the visa is being used for its intended purpose and not as a means to gain ongoing residency in Australia.
Some applicants may be required to demonstrate their English language proficiency by providing relevant evidence with their visa application. However, exemptions may apply to some students, although the Department of Home Affairs reserves the right to request evidence of English proficiency at any stage of the application process.
To be eligible for this visa, you need to have enough money to support yourself and any dependents for the duration of your stay in Australia. This includes covering your tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs. It may be necessary to provide evidence of your financial capacity when you apply for the visa.
To be eligible for the visa, all applicants must meet the health requirements, which may involve undergoing a health examination. Additionally, you are required to maintain adequate health insurance coverage while in Australia. Most education providers offer Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) to their international students, but you may choose to obtain health insurance from a provider of your choice and provide the policy details with your application.
Applicants for this visa must demonstrate good character. This includes disclosing any criminal convictions, charges or outstanding debts. The information provided will be assessed to determine your character and suitability to enter and remain in Australia.
If you plan to have family members accompany you during your stay in Australia, you have the option to submit a joint application or have them apply separately at a later time.
To include your family members in your application:
The visa is usually given for a period of up to 5 years.
During the course of your studies, you are permitted to work for a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight. During scheduled course breaks, you may work unlimited hours.
If you have family members accompanying you, they may work for up to 40 hours per fortnight once you have commenced your course.
You must depart Australia before your visa expires, or apply for an extension of your visa prior to its expiration. It may be possible to extend your visa for purposes such as continuing your studies, attending graduation, or for travel purposes. Please note that you can only hold one visa at a time, so it is important to inquire about visa extensions well in advance of your student visa's expiration date.
