The Australia Student Guardian (subclass 590) visa is designed to allow the custodian of a child under 18 years to accompany the child while they study in Australia. This visa is intended for individuals who are responsible for the student’s well-being while they are in Australia, such as a parent, legal guardian, or relative.

Introduction

The Australia Student Guardian (subclass 590) visa is designed for a parent or guardian who wants to accompany their child who is under 18 years old and holds a student visa while they study in Australia.

Important details to note before applying for this visa are:

  • The application can be lodged both inside or outside of Australia
  • The visa does not grant permission to work in Australia
  • The duration of the visa is linked to the length of the student’s visa, up to the point when the student turns 18 years old
  • The visa holder can enroll in an English Intensive Course for Overseas Students (EICOE) for fewer than 20 hours per week
  • The visa holder can also study another course up to 3 months
  • One student guardian can take care of more than one student under this visa.

VISA APPLICANTS

To be eligible for the Australia Student Guardian (subclass 590) visa, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must either be the parent or legal guardian of the student, or a relative over the age of 21 with written consent from the student’s parent.
  • You must have sufficient funds to cover your own living expenses as well as those of the student, including accommodation and general support.
  • You must have health insurance for yourself and any dependents accompanying you, and meet the health requirements.
  • You must meet the good character requirements.

There are also some restrictions on who can apply for this visa. You cannot bring family members under the age of 6 years old, and you must not be in debt to the Australian government.

CONDITIONS

Upon being granted this visa, you are required to comply with all the conditions of your visa and adhere to the laws of the state or territory in Australia. It is mandatory for you to stay with the student and you cannot leave Australia without the student.
